Advanced Learner Loans

If you’re aged 19 or over and looking to study a course at Level 3 or above, you may be eligible for an Advanced Learner Loan to help cover the cost of your tuition. This government-backed scheme is designed to make education more accessible – regardless of your income or employment status. 

What is an Advanced Learner Loan? 

The Advanced Learner Loan helps learners pay the tuition fees for eligible courses at approved colleges or training providers in England. The loan is paid directly to the training provider on your behalf and only covers course fees – not living expenses. 

You can borrow as little as £300, and the amount you get depends on: 

  • The type of course 
  • Your course fees 
  • The maximum loan available for your chosen course

What you need to know

  • There are no credit checks 
  • Income-based repayment (you only repay when you earn over the repayment threshold) 
  • Interest is charged from when the training provider or college receives their first payment  
  • Extra repayments are optional and non-refundable 
  • You can apply for up to four loans, and even for the same qualification level in a different subject 

Eligibility Criteria

To apply for an Advanced Learner Loan, you must: 

  • Be aged 19 or over on the first day of your course 
  • Be living in the UK on the first day of your course 
  • Be a UK national or Irish citizen, or have settled status 
  • Have been resident in the UK, EU, Channel Islands, or Isle of Man for 3 consecutive years
  • Have a UK National Insurance number 
  • Not have received more than 3 previous Advanced Learner Loans
  • There are no credit checks, and you can apply whether you’re employed, self-employed, unemployed, or in receipt of benefits. 

FAQ

Most frequent questions and answers

You’ll only start repaying your loan once your income goes above the repayment threshold. Repayments are automatically deducted from your salary, similar to student loan repayments. The amount you repay depends on your income, not the amount you borrowed. More information about repaying your Advanced Learner Loan is available here.  

Before you apply for an Advanced Learner Loan, make sure you:  

  1. Check eligibility with your training provider 
  1. Ask them for a ‘Learning and Funding Information’ letter – it will contain all the details you’ll need to apply 
  1. Apply online via gov.uk/advanced-learner-loan or by post if necessary 
  1. You’ll receive a confirmation letter within 2 weeks of applying online
